Hi everyone! So, today is my birthday and my present to myself is a spotlight on one of my favorite bands of all time! Their music and fashion choices are timeless, so I hope you enjoy!

Quintessential Songs: Straight On, Crazy On You, Magic Man

Musical Style: This sisterly duo was lovely to look at, but once you heard them play, you knew they were more than just eye candy. Nancy rocked the guitar as hard as any guy in the Seventies, and Ann’s voice crashed down with equal amounts of feral power and demonstrative beauty. Their signature style was two-parts rock and one-part folk, with deeply sensitive lyrics punctuating the fierce rhythms.

Quoted: “Back when we were first making records, you didn’t just make the music, you put a great deal of energy into the way it looked, and every word that was written on the whole thing.”

Fashion Style: Although their sound implied that they were ultra hard-asses on par with Led Zeppelin, their style reflected their soft femininity. One of their biggest influences was the gypsy style, including bohemian maxi skirts and gauzy tops. The cover of their 1977 album Little Queen shows the sisters in ornate embroidered velvet ensembles, proving that while they were interested in style, they were hardly a part of the cookie-cutter pop music machine.

Legacy: While the sisters are still recording and performing, what they will really be remembered for was their pioneering for women rockers in the 1970’s. Heart single-handedly proved that there was more to female musicians than disco style and breathy pop music. Since then, several female rock bands have followed in their footsteps, but not in the musical Zeitgeist that was the Seventies.
